FESTIVALS

The Chakhesangs celebrate various festivals throughout the year, of which ‘Sükrünye’ is the biggest and most significant. It is usually organised in the month of January. The days—7th to 15th January—have been reaffirmed and set aside for the entire Chakhesang community for the celebration of Sükrünye. It is a time for thanksgiving, merrymaking, and preparation for the upcoming agricultural season. During Sükrünye, people engage in traditional dances, songs, and games. They also offer prayers to their deities for a bountiful harvest.

Another important festival of the Chakhesang community is Thuni. Celebrated in January, it marks the beginning of the new year and is a time for renewal and rejuvenation. People participate in various rituals and ceremonies, including the offering of sacrifices to appease the spirits and seek their blessings for the coming year. Thuni is also a time for feasting and merrymaking, with people enjoying traditional delicacies and participating in cultural performances.

These festivals play a crucial role in preserving the cultural identity of the Chakhesang people and provide an opportunity for them to come together, celebrate their traditions, and pass them on to future generations.
